Welcome to ECA for Freelancers
Prepare to level up!
Hello and welcome to this additional mini course in which I will walk you through my entire character concept workflow that I use with my clients on a daily basis.
The goal of the Effective Concept Art Masterclass was to teach you an efficient method of designing and concepting so that you can fill your portfolio with professional-looking designs quickly and easily. With this example, I wanted to demonstrate that the method I am using and teaching can be used professionally, regardless of your art style or creative business.
In this mini-course, you will learn how to create more complex designs while maintaining a low level of difficulty and stress. Because what really matters is that you learn a system that works regardless of the type of assignment you will receive from clients as a concept artist.
Leaving art process myths in the past.
Before we get to the design itself, I want to talk about a mistake that many artists make. That would be overthinking their creation process, adding unnecessary steps that do not change the outcome, which the client does not really understand.
This is most likely also an issue with e-learning. I remember doing it as well! I was watching how other people draw their personal works and concept art, but I could not quickly adapt any of the ideas in a professional setting. I had to always come up with a hybrid version of what I had learned new and what I knew worked for me. Unfortunately, it caused a lot of confusion, because no one wants to hear that their way of designing is incorrect.
That is why the foundation of this mini-course is already what you know. We will just zoom out, look at the bigger picture, and add only those extra steps that we know will benefit the artwork or the production. Because it is a fact that a client will always require more work-in-progress pieces in order to manage production on time.
Solution: Make your workflow adaptable to any situation.
That is what we will try to learn over the next 8 hours of video and text. My goal for this ECA Masterclass was to ensure that within a week (or more), you will have enough knowledge and direction to become a character concept artist who acts professionally from day one.
You have probably heard that the best concept artists are those who can work with a variety of topics, styles, and techniques. And, while I do not believe that being multi-skilled is required to land a job, I do believe that building a workflow to any client's specifications must be as adaptable as lego blocks.
This Chapter will include:
- Using references from the client and building your own library
- Reading and analyzing an unclear brief
- Posing characters in a smart way for the Symmetry tool
- Coming up with thumbnails for yourself
- Refining three unique designs ( this time separately)
- Naming File Convention.
- Receiving Feedback
- Adjusting feedback by using method of variations
- Final touch-ups and presentation
- Homework
